“Being in a Men’s group for the last 4 years has given me the experience of being with men without competition, small talk or sports. It’s been the place where I can share and be supported in a way that I never expected.” TM
The need for men to gather and share has never been more necessary and more available. The rise of group experiences through the Mankind Project, Wounded Warriors, Men Mentoring Men and My Brother’s Keeper.
The crisis that men are experiencing now is one of loss and evolution. The roles are changing, stability is not guaranteed, support is eroding and men are often hesitant to ask for help. The fear of looking or being vulnerable is strong and debilitating at the same time.
For our whole society to evolve we need to support men in finding who they are beyond their idea traditional manhood, who they are as fathers and sons. Our guest on this weeks show is Dr. Warren Farrell, a long time feminist who has stepped into this fray to offer guidance, awareness and support for men recovering themselves in the absence of good fathering.
"In the eyes and hearts of men in a group you find the place of rest and acceptance that can help you find yourself.” LL
Kevin O’Donoghue LMHC has led the men’s group at The Positive Mind Center for over 5 years and has been a participant for over 10. The most common pain he sees in men is the inability of fathers to listen to their sons and visa versa. Kevin is pioneering ways to facilitate this dialog to begin to heal this generational wound. No matter how old you are or whether your father is still alive you can have that dialog. In doing this men begin to feel heard and seen by the one person they needed to have hear and see them the most, their father.
“We all need support. We all need help at some point in our lives. Having a group that I know I’m going to see every week helps me to allow those feelings and be more real in my relationships. I never miss a Monday.” CJ
